Here are some images that I had published in Australia’s Deadbeat Magazine. The feature is on Pink Mink Mafia’s (a Los Angeles based rock-a-chola clothing company) style, following and what they represent.

The shoot was held in an old service station in San Pedro, CA which also provided some classic cars (a chopped impala, a rat rod, & a rusted Chevy), both restored and in the process of being restored, and a great atmosphere for this assignment. In addition to the classic cars we had some friends bring over a few Harley Davidson bikes that really added to the shoot.

This assignment was shot with a Nikon D80 and 2 Nikon speed lights (1 – SB800 & 1 SB600) with a shoot through umbrella. This made things convenient because it allowed me to move around the shop freely without having to reset my lighting as would have been the case with bigger strobes.

The girls met up off site to take care of hair & makeup. After being dolled up by makeup artist Jami Jones & hair stylist Cristyn Hasson, the girls showed up looking great & ready to shoot. It took me about 20 min to set up and start popping of some shots.

I started working with some girls individually outside of the shop and eventually worked my way inside. Because of the shops limited space I was a little concerned about getting too many shots with the same background so I tried to move a lot and create different angles.

The inside of the shop was somewhat dark which concerned me because I was doubtful I would have enough power to light the girls while shooting in groups of 3 but after taking a few test shots that doubt quickly went away.

All in all the shoot went smoothly and I was very happy with the results. The PMM girls did an awesome job as always.

I would love to read your thought on the outcome of this shoot! Please leave a comment below and let me know what you think. Thanks.

The July 2010 issue of Rebel Ink Magazine titled “Rebel Pink” was one that featured about 41 of my images. The shoot took place at Hawleywood’s Barber Shop in Costa Mesa, CA. An all men’s barber shop in which a woman had never set foot in until the ladies of PinkMinkMafia persuaded Donny Hawley (owner of Hawleywood’s) to allow them in the shop.

This shoot proved to be one of my most challenging shoots to date simply because of the large amount of mirrors on one side of the room and the reduced amount of space in the shop. Positioning of the models, lighting and other equipment became an obstacle more than it usually is. However, after a few drinks from Starbucks to wake up and some maneuvering we managed to pull of a successful shoot and produce some great images.
